Danforth Bay Camping & RV Resort – RV Park Review
• Where is it? — Danforth Bay Camping & RV Resort is in Freedom, New Hampshire — near Ossipee in the Mount Washington Valley.
• Getting There — From Boston, points south or west, or anyplace in New Hampshire, follow NH Route 16 north to Route 41 North in West Ossipee. In less than a mile, turn right onto Ossipee Lake Road and in about five miles you’ll see the Danforth Bay Camping & RV Resort sign on the left, at the entrance to Shawtown Road. Follow Shawtown Road to the campground.
From the Portland, Maine area, follow Route 25 West into Effingham, NH, then take Route 153 North to Ossipee Lake Road and follow the directions above – except you’ll turn right onto Shawtown Road.
• Nearby Attractions — Tons of recreational opportunities in the Mount Washington Valley area, including hiking, skiing (Danforth Bay is a four-season RV Park), boating, fishing, scenic railway rides, the Mount Washington Auto Road and Cog Railway, dining, shopping, and more.
• The Sites — Danforth offers a variety of sites: from smaller tent sites up to those suitable for the biggest rigs. The ones we’ve been on with our 30′, two slide travel trailer have been quite level and very spacious. We have not felt “packed in” as you do at some parks. Both back-in and pull-through sites are available. Water pressure was consistently good and the shore power (our rig uses 30 amp power) remained steady at proper voltage.
• Amenities — This park offers lots of in-campground activities, entertainment, two big pools and a kiddy pool, a well-stocked camp store, playgrounds, a big recreation building, a snack bar, fishing, boating, too many things to list here, but all listed on their website: www.danforthbay.com. WiFi Internet access worked well from our site – better when I was outside than inside the RV. Although we use the bathroom in our RV, the bathrooms, showers, and laundry facilities here are spotless and up-to-date.
• Rates — Rates for the full-hookup (water/electric/sewer) sites that we prefer range from $57 to $78 per night. Sites offering water and electricity only are less. Pretty expensive compared to many (most?) NH RV parks, but Danforth is a nice place with well kept, level sites and all the amenities you could ask for. They also have a safari area for groups, as well as rental cabins.
• The People — The employees have all been very friendly and helpful to us. On one occasion, our tow vehicle broke down inside the park getting to our site. An employee used his personal truck to tow our rig to the site and position it for us. While I was having my truck repaired, Danforth management allowed us to leave our travel trailer on the site for an extra few days until I could come and get it…at no additional charge! If they had needed the site, I’d have had to move the rig into their storage area, but still very decent of them.
• The Pros — The sites we’ve been on have been very level and good sized. Both the cable TV and the WiFi have worked well. The water pressure is good and the electrical power at a consistently proper and steady voltage.
• The Cons — As noted above, the park is a bit pricey. When it’s dry, the camp roads are very dusty. A couple of times, we’ve found some of the interior roads to be extremely “pot-holey” – is that a word?
• Our rating — 4½ out of 5 stars — certainly one of our favorite RV parks!
